Weapons in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e)

Combat is one of the most relevant parts when you play Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition. In fact, if we were to sum up this role playing game, we don’t need to go further than the title. Eventually you could find yourself fighting dragons in dungeons. And to fight a dragon, you better have the best possible weapons. Because you have a titanic task ahead of you.

How do weapons work in DND 5e?

Even if the limit to the use of your weapons in D&D is your imagination, most of the times the weapons will be use during combat.

This is a special part of your role playing, where the action is so fast that we need to slow down to describe it in the needed detail. Thus, combat is normally divided by rounds. In any single round, both players and the Non-Player Characters (NPC) that the Dungeon Master is controlling will have the opportunity to move and carry, at the very least one action.

Fighting is the most obvious action to be performed together with casting spells for those characters who can. And when fighting, unless you are a monk, you will be using a weapon.

How Many Weapons Can You Carry in DnD 5e?

Possibly the most asked question when it comes to weapons in Dungeons and Dragons has to do with quantity. We are greedy people, and we always want to maximise the combat possibilities of our character. You are probably asking yourself, in D&D 5e, how many weapons can you carry?

First, it’s important to understand that carrying a weapon and wielding it are two different things. I will talk about wielding weapons further down this article, but now let’s focus on simply carrying weapons. How many weapons can you have on yourself?

The main rule to look at when it comes to carrying weapons is the carrying capacity. In the DnD Player’s Handbook we find the following on that regard:

Your carrying capacity is your Strength score multiplied by 15. This is the weight (in pounds) that you can carry, which is high enough that most characters don’t usually have to worry about it.

Player’s Handbook p. 176.

And it is really true that you don’t usually have to worry about it.

Given how high your carrying capacity is, you would be able to carry a decent amount of weapons. Considering the regular weight of a heavy crossbow or a pike, two of the heaviest weapons featured in the Player’s Handbook is 18 pounds, a character with a very low strength modifier (let’s say 6), would still be able to carry five of them.

Carrying capacity = 6 * 15lb = 90lb and
5x Pikes = 5 * 18lb = 90lb.
