Dice in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e)
Dice are, without a doubt, one of the most characteristic elements of tabletop role playing games in general and Dungeons & Dragons in particular. Having dice with you it’s usually a sign that you are a role player yourself, and the more you play, the more you care about the dice you have.
But what exactly are the dice in D&D for? Do you really need them? Which dice do you need? Answers to all these questions await you in this dicey article (sorry, I had to do it!)
What Are Dungeons & Dragons Dice?
When someone refers to Dungeons & Dragons dice, they are actually thinking about the dice sets normally used to play D&D.
Even if a regular dice set usually has seven dice, you can normally bring to your DnD games a combination of one or more of six different types of dice, based on the number of sides each die has.
- 4-sided dice (one or more), usually referred to as D4.
- 6-sided dice (one or more), usually referred to as D6.
- 8-sided dice (one or more), usually referred to as D8.
- 10-sided dice (one or more), usually referred to as D10.
- 12-sided dice (one or more), usually referred to as D12.
- 20-sided dice (one or more), usually referred to as D20.
Remember I said that a dice set usually has seven dice? Why are there only six types of dice?
Because there are some actions in Dungeons & Dragons that call for a percentile roll (1 to 100), for those you usually roll two 10-sided dice. In fact, on a dice set, one D10 will normally have numbers 0 to 9 while the other will have multiples of ten (10 to 90 plus 00).
